B2-C1 PREPOSITION PLACEMENT - FORMAL- INFORMAL REGISTER

FROM : GRAMMAR QUIZZES.COM

B1- B2-C1 Two Placements — End of Clause vs. Before Interrogative Pronoun

PREP AT THE END OF CLAUSE
A clause with an interrogative pronoun —who(m), where, when, why, how —which takes the place of the object in a prepositional phrase, may be worded as a question with the preposition at the end of the clause. See Grammar Notes regarding the long disputed rule "no prepositions at the end".¹
QUESTIONS
Who(m) is a dating service for? ("for" is stranded at the end)
The dating service is for whom?
Who(m) did you give your number to?
You gave your number to who(m)?
What kind of hobbies are you interested in?
You are interested in what kind of hobbies?
What does she look like?
She looks like what?
Where do you come from?
You come from where?
What are you concerned about?
You are concerned about what?
Which card did you pay with?
You paid with which card?
SHORT QUESTIONS
What for?   (expression)  purpose
Who for?  (expression)  recipient
Where to?  (expression)  toward a direction
What with?  (expression)  means or method, or tool
EMBEDDED QUESTIONS= INDIRECT QUESTIONS
Can you tell me what you are looking for?   (verbal idiom)
Do you know who she is talking to?
Do you have any idea what this is for?    purpose
Please let me know which person you are interested in?  (verbal + PP)
B2-C1

PREP BEFORE INTERROGATIVE PRONOUN
Some speakers prefer to keep the prepositional phrase together. They position the preposition before the interrogative pronoun at the beginning of the clause. While this placement is good for business and academic usage, it may sound overly formal in some contexts that are personal.
QUESTIONS
For whom is a dating service?
Formal wording is appropriate for business, legal, and academic usage.
To whom did you give your number?

In what kind of hobbies are you interested? formal
In which kind of program are you interested?
Like what does she look?  not used
From where do you come?  very formal
~About what are you concerned?
This is overly formal wording for a personal context.
With which card did you pay? formal

SHORT QUESTIONS
For what?  very formal
For whom? very formal
To where? very formal
With what?  very formal

B2 ( Grammar)--The order of adjectives

Descriptive writing is characterized as containing sentences with more than one adjective. When this occurs in English, adjectives are placed before the noun they qualify and follow a specific order which is determined by the adjective and its use. We might use an adjective to talk about shapes, colours, origin, etc.
To learn more read the power point below or click here.

ADVANCED POINTS: ORDER OF ADJECTIVES.
Explanation and examples
Adjective order exercise.
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES EXERCISES.

ADVANCED POINTS- SPOKEN LANGUAGE AND THE USE OF ADJECTIVES
When speaking we try not to put too many adjectives in front of the noun. How do we avoid doing this?
By adding phrases beginning with and, with or in or adding a relative clause.
Have a look at these examples:
1. rather stupid-looking, clumsy birds with blue feet and long necks.
2. Charming, rustic cottages in stone. In = de
3. delicious Thai curries, ( which were)made of fish and coconut.

Lyrics to Higher Ground by UB40

Every hour of every day I'm learning ___________
The_________ I learn, the __________ I know about before
The _________ I know, the _________ I want to look around
Digging deep for clues on higher ground

Moon  and __________ sit way up high
Earth and _________ beneath them lie
The ________blows fragrant lullaby
To cool the night for you and I

On the wings the birds _________ free
Leviathan tames angry _________
The flower waits for honeybee
The __________ wakes new life in me

Every hour of every day I'm learning ___________
The_________ I learn, the __________ I know about before
The _________ I know, the _________ I want to look around
Digging deep for clues on higher ground

The fishes swim while rivers run
Through fields to feast my eyes upon
Intoxicated drinking from
The loving cup of burning __________

In dreams I'll crave familiar _________
Of whispered rain on weary__________
Of kisses sweet and warm ___________
 Another time another __________

And every hour of every day I'm learning ___________
The_________ I learn, the __________ I know about before
The _________ I know, the _________ I want to look around
Digging deep for clues on higher ground
