A1 (Pronunciation lesson- dipthong /ei/ ) : My fair Lady

My fair Lady, based on Pygmalion, tells us the story of Eliza Doolittle, a poor and illiterate ( analfabeta) woman transformed into a lady by Professor Henry Higgins. But first, she has to take some pronunciation lessons.
At first, she cannot pronounce dipthong /ei/ and Professor Henry Higgins tells her to repeat 50 times the rhyming sentence: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.

After some lessons and repetitions, Eliza learns to say: The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.
The spelling "ai" is pronounced as /ei/ in English

Repeat after her...



So, remember, sometimes we have to read words out loud to learn their pronunciations. 


/ei/ sound:

• Usually spelling  "ai" is pronounced as / ei/.
• Another example of /ei/ pronunciation is in short words with "a" and a magic "e" at the end of it. Example: name /neim/.
• Exceptions: Thai food /tai/
